BJP flays milk price hike

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary, Vijay Goel, has criticised the Delhi Government and the Centre for increasing the price of milk that was a necessity for children, particularly those belonging to poor families.

Stating that the increase in the price of milk had taken this essential commodity of daily use out of the reach of the poor, Mr. Goel questioned the timing of the increase. “The only variable in milk production is the transportation cost, from the farmer to the milk plants in tankers and then the transportation of processed milk to the consumer. While the international petroleum prices have dropped, milk prices in this country have risen by about 20 per cent in a year.”

The BJP leader charged that bad economics by the Centre was a reason behind the price hike. “While the price of milk all over the country has increased by Rs. 3 per litre on an average in the past one year, the procurement price of milk from the farmers has barely moved up.” Mr. Goel stated that the latest increase has come at a time when “the country is estimated to have witnessed maximum growth in milk production.”
