Odissi Sangeet Sandhya tomorrow

Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to consolidate the claim of Odissi music as an Indian classical style of music along with the Hindustani and the Carnatic; Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi has announced to host Odissi Sangeet Sandhya – an evening of Odissi music – at Rabindra Mandap here on Tuesday.

Akademi secretary Mr. Manmath Nath Satpathy told The Hindu that the event, the first-of-its-kind to be staged by the State-owned Akademi, would comprise recitals with demonstrations and deliberations on the classical aspects of Odissi singing by eminent gurus and vocalists. The exponents include Damodar Hota who is a pioneer of the udra-padhhatiya singing style, well-known guru Gopal Chandra Panda, noted music composer and former chief executive of the State-owned Odissi Research Centre, music scholars Kirtan Narayan Padhi and Tirthananda Mohanty, singers Mitali Chinara, Sangita Panda, Bandita Ray and Rabi Narayan Mishra, it was learnt.

Although Odissi dance has already gained classical status and global recognition, ironically enough Odissi music that has been an integral part of the dance style is yet to be conferred the classical status despite having all the features of classicism, observed Mr. Satpathy.

Following demands from the Odissi community and the public as well for classical status for Odissi music, the State Government has taken up a number of initiatives for its promotion at the national- level.

Culture Minister Surya Narayan Patro and Commissioner of Culture Bijay Chandra Jena would attend the event.
