Plea to expedite consumer redress

BHUBANESWAR: The city-based Citizens Apex Association (CAA) has demanded processes associated with approaching consumer redress fora be simplified and cases be disposed of with more efficiency through limited numbers of District Consumer Disputes Redressal Fora (DCDRF).

It said monthly statement of filing and disposal of cases for January 2008 showed that 4612 consumer complaint cases and 1860 miscellaneous applications were pending before district fora.

“A large number of consumer complaints are pending for disposal before the district forum for years against the norms for disposal in three months on general complaints and five months in respect of cases requiring analysis and testing,” CAA president N. K. Panda said.

As per information supplied under Right To Information Act, 47 cases had been pending in 12 districts for more than five months after being filed.

As many as 45 cases were pending with the Berhampur forum for more than three years. Similarly, there were 148 cases that could not be disposed of within one year. Moreover, there were 62 cases which were two years old.

DCDRF in Keonjhar, Jeypore, Jajpur and Balasore were also having huge pendency against norm for disposal.

At present besides the State consumer redressal forum, 31 district consumer forums are functioning in the State. The annual budget provided for the State Consumer Dispute Redressal commission for the year 2007-08 is Rs. 38.62 lakhs and for 31 district forums Rs. 210.19 lakhs.
