College near Hyderabad declared ‘unauthorised’

Special Correspondent

A.P. government ‘unaware’ of existence of Narayana College

Railing collapsed there in which 1 student died, 29 others were injured on Saturday

College would be closed and the students absorbed in other institutions

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government has declared Narayana College at Chengicherla where the collapse of a railing resulted in the death of a student and injuries to 29 others on Saturday as “unauthorised” and announced a drive to detect such institutions all over the State.

The government has also admitted that it was unaware of the existence of the college. It had no knowledge whether the institution was a junior college or a concept school. A name board on the main road leading to the college reads ‘concept school’ but the institution itself functioned in the name of a junior college.

Inspections across State

Higher Education Minister R. Chenga Reddy told a press conference on Sunday that ten teams comprising officials of the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE), revenue, Panchayat Raj and engineering departments would carry out inspections State-wide and submit reports to the government within ten days. If any of the colleges were found to be lacking recognition, immediate action against such institutions would follow.

Mr. Reddy said the government did not accord permission to Narayana College or its building at Chengicharla. The Regional Inspection Officer of BIE was unaware of the college ever since it carried out admissions and academic activity in June this year. The construction of the building lacked standards. The college would be closed and the students absorbed in other institutions.
