Chennai: Southern Railway and St. Joseph’s College of Engineering captured the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the Choldamandalam Sports Development Trust (Thanjavur) invitation volleyball tournament for the Velammal Cup at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Sunday. While Southern Railway confirmed its stature as among the top teams in the State with a comfortable straight-set victory over Indian Bank for the Rs.30,000 cash award, St. Joseph’s College prevailed over GKM in three sets to retain the title. For all the expectations raised, the final underlined a total dominance by the Railway team for whom James, Senthil and Mukesh were prominent. That the team won at 25-20, 25-22, 25-16 only underscores Railway’s dominance. Gowri played a leading role in steering St. Joseph’s to a trophy triumph supported commendably by Sarathambika as libero. For the GKM Kalaivani caught the eye with her allround efficiency. Mr. W. I. Dawaram, President, Tamil Nadu Athletics Association, presided and gave away the prizes. The results: Men: Final: Southern Railway bt Indian Bank 25-20, 25-22, 25-16; Third place: IOB bt SDAT 30-28, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18.
