Thiruvananthapuram: The Army will display some of its fighting equipment for the public at Shangumughom beach on September 28. The display will include a Russian-built T-72 battle tank, brought via road in a tank carrier from Secunderabad, a 130 mm field gun (of the type widely used in Kargil war), a jeep-mounted recoilless anti-tank gun, a Russian-made infantry combat vehicle, 9 mm Browning service pistols, machine guns, self-loading rifles, light machine guns, Indian small arms systems 5.56 mm assault rifle, medium grenade launcher, 84 mm rocket launcher, automatic grenade launching systems, night-vision equipment, hand-held thermal imagers, laser range finders and battlefield surveillance radars. The display will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Coast Guard and the Army will display amphibious assault operations and sea rescue exercises with the help of motorised rubber dinghies and helicopters. The Army will also fly manned hot-air balloons. At 4.30 p.m. on September 27, the motorcycle stunt team of the Core of Military Police, Shweta Ashwa, will perform at the Chandrasekhar Nair stadium. Three Army bands will also perform at the function. The same day morning, Defence Minister A. K. Antony will distribute scooters to disabled war veterans at a function at RDR Auditorium, Jagathy. He will also distribute financial assistance to war widows. General Officer Commanding in Chief Lt. General Noble Thamburaj; Adjutant General Lt. General Thomas Mathew and Major General E.J. Kochekkan will be present.
