Capping honest intentions

Director Madhupal

There are no commercial motives behind ‘Thalappavu,’ says its director Madhupal.

“I wanted to make an honest film,” the actor-turned-director said at a meet-the-press programme in Kozhikode on Monday. “There was scope for adding commercial ingredients to ‘Thalappavu,’ but I didn’t want to.” ;

About the dependence on the stream of consciousness technique of his debut film’s narrative, Madhupal said that it was required. “To portray the mind of the repentant policeman who was forced to gun down a Naxalite in a fake encounter, I thought I needed to use a zigzag style,” he explained.

Script-writer Babu Janardanan said that ‘Thalappavu’ was the result of a casual chat with actor Prithviraj. “I told him that he resembled Varghese, the Naxalite who was killed in Wayanad by the police some three decades ago,” he elaborated. “I said we could make a film if he was willing to do the role of Varghese. He agreed and his presence has helped us market the movie better. Besides, he also reduced his remuneration considerably.”

The director said he had worked hard on getting the cast, the costume and the location right. “The experience of cinematographer Alagappan came in really handy,” he added.
