This Day That Age
The pro-Western Cabinet of the Lebanon formally resigned on September 22 to make way for a new Government headed by General Fuad Chehab, the President-elect. President Camille Chamoun, the outgoing President, accepted the Cabinet’s resignation and thanked it for its work. A new Government will be formed immediately after General Chehab takes office on September 23. The Government called in American troops this summer when faced with the threat of being overthrown by a nationalist insurrection. It took office in November, 1956. Lebanon was under curfew on September 22 and strict security precautions were in operation to prevent incidents as President Chamoun neared the end of his six-year term of office.
