The British delegation to the Commonwealth Trade and Economic Conference in Montreal on September 21 emphasised the urgent need for improving the teaching of English which it described as the “free language of science”, in less developed countries. The delegation, in a press statement, said that the “ability of students from overseas to get the full benefit from higher training in the U.K. and elsewhere is limited unless their knowledge of English is good enough. It is necessary to improve the teaching of English in less developed countries.”
