Letters to the Editor
This refers to your editorial “Resist draconian measures” (September 20). Your views against POTA and TADA Act are justifiable only under normal circumstances. When the country is facing an extraordinary situation vis-À-vis terrorism, it indeed needs draconian laws to apprehend culprits. Augmenting police forces and streamlining intelligence could at best be a cosmetic remedy. Unfolding events now point to the Indian Mujahideen network operating from different States. Only stringent laws will be able to take on such killer elements. K. Sivasubramanian, Chennai Proponents of strict anti-terror laws argue that since the U.S. has strict anti-terror laws, there has not been any bomb blasts after the 9/11. Cui bono (who stands to gain)? May I say that in the U.S. the intelligence and police are accoutred with the best technology and weapons to combat terrorism? That the U.S. does not face insurgency as we do from Pakistan? That the police in the U.S. don’t work as clumsily while solving a case like the Arushi Talvar murder? May I remind that in the U.S. politicians don’t play blame game when it comes to combating terrorism? Needless to mention that the attack on Parliament and the Mumbai incidents happened when such laws were in place. Shadab Husain, Lucknow
