Letters to the Editor
Kudos to The Hindu for paying an appropriate tribute to the memory of the freedom fighter and a veteran communist leader P. Ramamurti through an excellent write-up (September 20). The fearless revolutionary broke down uncontrollably at the funeral of V.P. Chintan, another indisputable leader of the working class, in May 1987, but his end came the same year, on the day he was to have addressed the all-India conference of Democratic Youth Federation of India. The legendary B.T. Ranadive appropriately quoted Kalidasa’s verses from Shakuntalam, “Here I stop describing your personality, not that I do not have anything more to extol, but because my language fails me to go beyond,” while remembering PR. S.V. Venugopalan, Chennai I have heard P. Ramamurti address textile workers. In simple, direct language, he used to build up the arguments in a convincing style, making even an illiterate worker understand his problem. He lent wholehearted support to the then Education Minister in his war of words with the then Vice-Chancellor on introducing mother-tongue as the medium of instruction in higher education. S.S. Rajagopalan, Chennai
