KATHMANDU: The third Power Summit is being held here from Tuesday to discuss the potential of Nepal’s rivers to generate electricity to be used in Nepal and India. Speaking on Monday, Sandip Shah, president of Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal, said investment issues related to generating electricity in Nepal, and to market and sell it in India would be discussed. T. N. Thakur, CMD of PTC India Limited, asked: “Why let the rivers simply flow to the sea, without taking the wealth it can generate for the two countries.” India would like to help in generating 10,000 MW of electricity and this would require an investment of Rs. 70 crore, he added. Arun Kumar Chaudhary, Nepal-India Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, said the government should readdress Nepal’s water resources potential. “Earlier, hydropower was politicised,” he said, adding: “It should now be treated as a ‘business’.”
