Corrections and clarifications

* * The second paragraph of “Resist draconian measures” (Editorial, September 20, 2008) was “One of the most abused provisions of POTA was that accused could seek bail only a year from the date of detention ….” It should have been “… only after a year from the date of detention”.

* * A hawk-eyed reader spotted an error in the caption of the accompanying AP photograph, in a report “Seven killed in Orissa floods” (September 20, 2008). It read: “Desperate Effort: A villager holds on to a telephone post while trying to collect floating sticks to be used for cooking, at the Naraj barrage on the Kathjodi river in Cuttack on Friday.” He said looking at the post in question, the size of insulators and the number of conductors (four ACSR conductors strung on post top insulators), it is an electricity distribution post used for LT voltage, 415V three-phase.

* * The last paragraph of a report “India to purchase pulses from Myanmar” (September 19, 2008) was “Despite being the largest producer of pulses annually, India imports between 2.5 million to 3 million tonnes almost every year to bridge the gap between demand and supply. In 2007-08 the pulses output was 15.1 million tonnes but the demand hovers around 17.5 million tonnes prompting the need to export ….” It should have been “… the need to import”.
