Passengers’ ordeal

Boarding a bus these days has become an ordeal for the passengers, especially the aged ones and women with children. The moment a bus is halted, the people, unmindful of the risk involved, make a beeline to it and try to push themselves in, not even permitting those getting down to do so without difficulty. The clever somehow “reserve” seats by placing their towel or bags.

Exempt small traders

Under the Value Added Tax Act & Rules, all small traders who have annual sales turnover below Rs.10 lakh are totally exempted. Likewise, such traders who employ two or three persons should be exempted from the provisions of the Shops & Establishment Act. I appeal to the Chief Minister to exempt small shop owners having annual sales of Rs. 10 lakhs and below from the purview of the Shops Act, which will bring great relief to small traders.

Damaged pipelines

In Paramakudi laying of pipes for Cauvery water project is in progress. Workers have damaged the drinking water pipelines in Bharathi Nagar area. Now the sewage water is mixed with the drinking water pipeline. It will cause vomiting and diarrhoea to public. For the one week water has been supplied with mixing of sewage water. Will the Municipal authority repair the pipeline and supply drinking water through municipal pipelines?

V. Rajendran,

Paramakudi.

Comforting order

The Commissioner of Civil Supplies has announced that those who want LPG Connections and refill supplies are not required to produce ration cards hereafter and the LPG distributers should not insist on production of ration cards. This decision seems to be a solace to the gas consumers.

As of now LPG connections are provided only on the production of ration cards. Owing to this strict procedure, a lot of people are deprived of getting gas connections because they could not get ration cards from the Civil Supplies Department.

As early as in the year 1998, the Government of India had instructed the authorities concerned to accept the photo identity cards for identification instead of ration cards. These instructions were not carried out effectively.

Following the orders of the Tamil Nadu Government issued now, the oil companies accept the production of certain documents such as electricity bill, telephone bill and passport etc., for providing LPG connections and refill supplies.

There is every possibility of discarding the orders of the government by the LPG distributions.

Hence, the Collectors and oil companies’ higher officials must be directed to oversee the supply of LPG connections.

G. Nagasamy,

Ramanathapuram.
