THENI: Reduction of petrol and diesel prices alone would control prices in the country. The DMK, an ally of the Congress, must press the Central Government to slash prices of petrol and diesel to check price rise, said T. Pandian, State secretary of the Communists Party of India. He was talking to reporters after taking part in 11th State-level conference of National Federation of Indian Women, women’s wing of the Communist Party of India, here on Monday. Crude oil prices in international market had come down to dollar 96 per barrel from whopping $ 146. But the Centre did not scale down single paise in petroleum prices in domestic market. “The DMK could even threaten to withdraw of its support to the central government in order to control prices.” Instead of pressing the Centre to take remedial measures for price stability, the Chief Minister announced Re.1 a kg rice and 10 grocery items for Rs.50 schemes. But these announcements did not evoke much response from the people, he said. The CPI would observe a fast in district headquarters on October 2, to protest killings of Tamil fishermen and Indian support to Sri Lankan Army, Mr. Pandian announced. To a question on alliance with other parties, he said that the CPI would not hesitate to hold talks with the AIADMK. “We will meet PMK also. If they insist on Congress’ presence in the alliance, we will say good bye.” Reacting to a talk between CPI (M) with the DMDK, he stated that negotiations could be done with the DMDK also. Nothing was wrong in it.
