Sale of cooperative lottery launched

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has given credit to the cooperative sector for providing at least some relief from what he called the Centre’s pursuit of privatisation as part of the implementation of its policy of globalisation.

The Chief Minister, who was inaugurating the sale of tickets of the Saharkarana Navaratnam Bumper Lottery of the Cooperative Department here on Monday, said the fair price shops opened by the department during the Onam-Ramzan festival period provided much relief to the people.

Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran presided.

The noted Malayalam film personality Madhu bought the first ticket. He was followed by the cooperative sector leaders E. Narayanan, Koliyakkode Krishnan Nair, T.H. Mustapha and A.K. Narayanan.

Food Minister C. Divakaran; Fisheries Minister S. Sharma; Chief Secretary P.J. Thomas; Additional Chief Secretary Neela Gangadharan; Director of Lotteries V. Gopinath; and Registrar of Cooperative Societies Rani George.

Draw on November 24

The draw of the tickets, priced at Rs.100 each, is on November 24. The first prize is Rs. 2 crore, the second prize Rs. 5 lakh each for 10 winners and the third prize Rs. 1 lakh each for five winners. The State government proposes to use the revenue from the lottery for the comprehensive development of the cooperative sector and for the revival of sick societies.
