This Day That Age
The U.N. General Assembly resumed on September 23 its debate on a Steering Committee recommendation not to include the vexed question of Chinese representation on the agenda for the current session. Sweden, Finland, Ireland and six other countries including the Soviet Union, lined up with India in the General Assembly on September 22 to demand that the world organisation take up the issue of Chinese representation on its agenda. The bitter debate on a seven-Power amendment that the Steering Committee’s recommendation not to inscribe on the Assembly’s agenda an Indian item to discuss the issue be set aside was held in a tense atmosphere — with events in Formosa casting their shadow.
