dated September 24, 1958: Voluntary Health Services

The Voluntary Health Services, Madras, has organised a Medical Aid Plan to provide modern medical help to persons earning Rs.400 or below a month. This is a non-profit society registered with the object of increasing the scope and standards of medical relief, medical education, medical research and public health. The society has an ambitious programme, based on the study of the experiences and knowledge of similar work in other countries as well as a realistic appreciation of the Indian scene. Many such voluntary agencies exist in Western countries. In India, there are very few private organisations actually undertaking the proposed medical work. Philanthropists have no doubt built maternity homes and wards and handed them over to the government, but the entire running of a medical institution on a voluntary basis is unknown in South India except perhaps for sanatoria meant for the tuberculosis.
