ALAPPUZHA: A long-awaited project to bestow heritage status for Alappuzha is finally underway. The groundwork and study reports for the project, which has been handed over to the Aranmula-based Vastu Vidya Gurukulam (VVG) by the State Town Planning Department, are expected to be completed by March next year. The department will fund the project. “The aim is to have a Heritage Walk that will showcase the historical structures and unique architecture of Alappuzha. There are several homes and even companies like Aspinwall and Goodacre, which are part of the heritage of this town, but quite unfamiliar to the new generation. The plan is to create awareness on all these and also to ensure conservation of the town’s heritage,” K.C. Venugopal, Alappuzha MLA, told The Hindu after a meeting on the project held here on Tuesday. The State Town Planning Department P.N. Suresh, executive director, VVG, said nearly 30 per cent of the work was already over.
