“IT sector resilient enough”

Staff Reporter

It can weather economic cycles of ‘booms and busts,’ says expert

MADURAI: The Indian Information Technology sector was resilient enough to weather the global economic cycles of ‘booms and busts.’ Application management services were still strong, as banks and airports have to keep operating under any economic circumstance, Venkatesan Seshadri, senior vice-president, Birlasoft (India), said here on Tuesday.

He is a Steering Committee Member of the annual ‘iTalent’ event of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which aims at showcasing the talents of students in developing information technology related projects for industry applications. He was in the city to brief college students about the contest.

Mr. Seshadri said that economic slowdown in the United States presented an opportunity. Those companies would be under pressure to reduce transaction cost.

Domestic market strong

Also, unlike the previous economic downturn, India had a strong domestic market with a growth of 26 per cent in rupee terms to offset the loss of business abroad, he said.

Expectations were going up and as a result “performance-based action” by software companies on employees would continue. Due to the uncertainty in markets, clients were adopting a “wait-and-watch” approach.

Mr. Seshadri told students that they need not worry and the future was bright.

Speaking about the three-stage contest, he said it was open to final year students of ECE, EEE, IT and Computer Science, Electronics and Instrumentation, IT and Electronics (UG/PG), M.Sc. (Computer Science) and MCA streams.

The first three prizes would be Rs.75,000, Rs.50,000 and Rs.25,000, including a citation and a trophy. All finalists would receive a cash award of Rs.1,000.

For details, contact the CII Regional Office at 044 424 44555 or email: educationsc@ciionline.org. The last date for receiving contest papers is October 15.
