Slew of events on the cards to promote tourism

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: A plethora of events, including package tours, have been planned for the two-day ‘World Tourism Day’ celebrations here that start on September 26. “Seven different tours to be taken out to highlight Madurai’s tourism potential will be the highlight of this edition,” Tourist Officer K. Dharmaraj told The Hindu here on Tuesday.

State-level tourism celebrations were being held every year at different cities to mark World Tourism Day (September 27). It was held in Chennai in 2006, in Kancheepuram in 2007, and this year Madurai had been chosen. The package tour to seven different places to be taken out on September 27 would promote aspects on history, rural tourism, memorials, heritage sites, sacred places and eco-tourism potential of the district. ‘Theruvora Thiruvizha’ (street corner festival) would also be launched on the occasion. A ‘Heritage Walk’ would be taken out from Tirumalai Nayak Palace to Meenakshi temple.

On September 26, a music troupe from Thiruvananthapuram will perform Tamil songs. A folk art performance has also been organised. A cycle rally with messages to promote tourism will be taken out by 200 persons, besides a rally by the physically handicapped around Mariamman Teppakulam.

Mr. Dharmaraj said that a quiz contest, ‘kolam’ competitions, photography exhibition and free medical camp would be organised at Gandhi Memorial Museum on September 26.
