Security guards assaulted at Singur

Special Correspondent

Kolkata: Blaming the Trinamool Congress for instigating the attack on two security personnel within the Tata Motors project site at Singur on Monday night, the Left Front urged the West Bengal government to ensure law and order and create an atmosphere condusive to resuming work.

This request on Tuesday came on a day when Industries Minister Nirupam Sen said in New Delhi that the prospect of the project getting off the ground was getting bleaker with each passing day in view of the “unreasonable” stand of the Opposition on return of land to farmers who have not accepted compensation for their plots acquired for the project.

The developments at Singur took a turn for the worse following the assault on the two security personnel there. They have been hospitalised.

In view of the continued confrontation and agitation at the site, Tata Motors suspended work on September 2 to ensure the safety of its employees and contract labour.

In a statement here, Biman Bose, Chairman of the Left Front Committee, said the recent attempts to disrupt peace at the project site through agitations purported to be “peaceful” were indicative of attempts by the Trinamool and its allies to subvert the development process in the State.
