CBI to probe Uttar Pradesh Provident Fund scam
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation the probe into the Uttar Pradesh provident fund scam, in which the names of some judges from the higher judiciary, including one from the apex court, cropped up.
It is alleged that an employee in the government treasury siphoned off crores in PF funds in collusion with district judges posted in Ghaziabad.
The court granted three months to the agency to submit a probe status report.
However, a Bench, headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat, said the CBI would in no way be stopped from filing the final report earlier. “The court before which the final report/charge sheet is placed will deal [with it] according to the law.”
The apex court said the CBI would nominate an investigating officer who could take the assistance of State government officials.
The Uttar Pradesh government would the provide manpower and infrastructure for carrying out an effective investigation. – PTI
