Workshop on heart defects of ‘blue babies’

HYDERABAD: With blue babies comprising almost 50 per cent of the infants born with heart diseases and about 60 per cent of them having a defective heart condition known as ‘tetralogy of fallot’, experts have cautioned against delaying corrective surgery in such cases.

A two-day workshop on tetralogy of fallot, in which the heart has four defects, is being organised by CARE hospitals on September 27 and 28, its chairman B. Soma Raju and senior cardio-thoracic surgeons told reporters here on Tuesday. Renowned paediatric cardiac surgeons, including K.M. Cherian would attend the workshop comprising didactic updates and various operative and interventional procedures to treat the blue babies with such defects. Hemanth Kaukuntla and B.R. Jagannath, cardiothoracic surgeons said that eight to ten cases covering the whole spectrum of tetralogy of fallot would be demonstrated and discussed.

Aimed at increasing the awareness among professionals, latest management and treatment techniques would be the focus of the workshop. They said the ‘tetralogy of fallot’ could be completely corrected by surgery and the child cured of the condition.

CARE Nursing College would conduct a special session on September 28 to create awareness.
