TIRUCHI: “In the present security scenario, the expectations of the travelling public from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) are enormous,” Divisional Railway Manager S. Subrahmanyan said on Tuesday.

Addressing the RPF personnel after taking the salute at the 24th RPF Raising Day celebrations organised here, Mr. Subrahmanyan called upon the members of the force to dedicate themselves to doing their best for the passengers.

The RPF, which was hitherto protecting railway property, had been vested with the additional responsibility of protecting passengers and their belongings in trains and on station premises in the wake of the amendments made to the RPF Act and Railways Act from July 2004.

The personnel of RPF Tiruchi division were escorting 20 mail and express trains, he said, adding there was no incident of robbery and dacoity. The closed circuit television installed in Villupuram station would be commissioned shortly to enhance surveillance on the railway premises. Closed circuit television network had been planned for Tiruchi Junction also.

The RPF had procured 152 walkie-talkie sets for enhancing the communication system, 24 hand-held metal detectors and four door frame metal detectors to detect dangerous articles.

He said a total of 5,731 persons had been prosecuted under various sections of the Railway Act, thereby realising a fine amount of Rs. 10.63 lakh in 2007. As many as 81 cases were registered under the Railway Property Unlawful Possession Act and stolen property worth Rs. 4.02 lakh had been recovered.

Earlier, Divisional Railway Manager witnessed a ceremonial marchpast by the RPF and Railway Protection Special Force personnel. Divisional Security Commissioner, RPF Tiruchi S.R. Gandhi, Additional Divisional Railway Manager Ramasubbu, senior railway and RPF officials were present on the occasion.
