Tiruchi
ARRIVED: Imported mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP) being unloaded at Tiruchi on Tuesday. — TIRUCHI: Growing awareness among the farming community on the use of mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP), ideally suited for soil fertility, has forced the Indian Farmers’ Fertiliser Co-operative Society (IFFCO) to supply this imported fertilizer to the farmers of central districts. A consignment of 2,664 tonnes of MAP, imported from Russia, reached Tiruchi on Tuesday from Kandla port in Gujarat. Chief Area Manager, IFFCO, Tiruchi, B. Krishnan said that the MAP was superior to the conventional di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser thanks to a richer phosphate content. “This has virtually created a sea-change in the attitude of the farmers who were switching over to the MAP,” he said. This was the first time that the IFFCO supplied the MAP to the farmers of central districts, realising the growing demand for the fertilizer among the paddy-growers, Mr. Krishnan told The Hindu after receiving the consignment. Senior Field Manager of IFFCO D. Subramanian said that the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Marketing Federation (TANFED) would supply MAP through the co-operative units in Thanjavur, Karur, Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Pudukottai districts. He said that the content of nitrogen and phosphorous in the ratio 11.52 has been attracting the farmers to a great extent. The TANFED authorities had made special transport arrangements. It has been planned to supply about 900 tonnes to Tiruchi; 500 tonnes to Thanjavur; 400 tonnes to Pudukottai and 300 tonnes to Karur, 200 tonnes each to Perambalur and Ariyalur districts. Although only 1,250 tonnes of fertiliser was expected to reach Tiruchi, the extra supply has facilitated the IFFCO to include Thanjavur district too, Mr. Krishnan said.
