Their scooter was hit from behind by a sand-laden lorry on Medavakkam Main Road
TAMBARAM: A 52-year-old man died and his wife was hospitalised after the scooter they were riding was hit by a sand-laden lorry on Medavakkam Main Road on Tuesday morning.
M.D. Viswanathan was working as a purchase officer with the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, while his wife Kamakshi (46) was employed with the Department of Posts.
They were residents of E.V.R. Street, Vengaivaasal, near Tambaram.
Police said the couple were riding the scooter and on their way to work. At BHEL Nagar in Medavakkam, they were negotiating a pothole, when the speeding lorry hit them from behind.
The couple were thrown off their vehicle.
A family friend, who was travelling in the same direction, noticed the injured couple and took them to a private hospital in Pallikaranai.
Viswanathan, who sustained serious head injuries, was pronounced dead on arrival. Kamakshi is undergoing treatment.
The traffic police said a fatal accident occurred at the same spot some months ago, owing to poor road condition.
