Manmohan hopeful of ‘nuclear trophy’
Harish Khare
ON BOARD THE SPECIAL AIRCRAFT: As he headed towards a United States preoccupied with its financial meltdown, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that he was still hopeful of returning home with “the nuclear trophy.”
Interacting briefly with the media on board his special plane on Tuesday, Dr. Singh observed that while political leaders had often to live with the possibilities of disappointment he believed that the “finalisation” of the India-U.S. civilian nuclear agreement could come about during his visit.
On Wednesday, he will be in Washington, where he is scheduled to have a meeting with U.S. President George Bush.
The initial hope was that during this interaction at the White House, the President would have been able to inform the Prime Minister that the legislative process on the “123” agreement was complete. But with the financial crisis commanding American policy-makers’ attention, the Indian delegation is resigned to the possibility of a delay in the original time table.
