New York: U.S. President George W Bush on Tuesday acknowledged Pakistan’s sovereignty and offered help in improving security to fight terrorism during his first-ever meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari amid tensions over U.S.-led incursions targeting militants in Pakistani territory. During their brief meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations which have become strained following the cross-border raids by U.S.-led troops from Afghanistan. The U.S. President also expressed condolences over Saturday’s massive suicide bombing on the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad. He also recalled the assassination of Mr. Zardari’s wife and former Premier, Benazir Bhutto, in December. “It reminded me about the great suffering that they and you have been through with the loss of your beloved wife, and I thank you very much for staying involved in public service to honour her legacy,” he said. Amid increasing concerns in Pakistan over U.S. incursions into its tribal belt in hot pursuit of militants, Mr. Bush assured Mr. Zardari that the U.S. acknowledges the country’s sovereignty. “Your words have been very strong about Pakistan’s sovereign right and sovereign duty to protect your country, and the U.S. wants to help,” he said before the meeting. — PTI
