dated September 25, 1958: WHO session opens

Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-President, inaugurating the eleventh annual session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia in New Delhi on September 24 said that it should lay great stress not only on the development of physical health but also on mental health and renovation of human nature. About 40 representatives from nine countries and other U.N. specialised agencies are participating in the week-long conference. Dr. Radhakrishnan praised the role of the World Health Organisation in the Asian countries which were under-developed and under-nourished. Many countries in Asia were planning for agricultural and industrial development, but it would not be possible to attain it unless they raised the standard of health and efficiency. In order to raise the standard of life of the Asian people, he said, the WHO should try to raise the standard of nutrition, housing and environmental hygiene.
