Inspection is mandatory for getting clearance Kollam cargo port is already Customs notified KOLLAM: J.P. Gergory, commissioner, Central Excise and Customs, Thiruvananthapuram, conducted a site inspection of the Kollam cargo port complex on Wednesday evening. The inspection is a mandatory formality for giving Customs clearance for the port. Mr. Gregory told The Hindu that the main aim of the inspection was to assess the security arrangements at the new port and whether these would tally with the strict Customs norms. Mr. Gregory said he was prima facie satisfied with the arrangements and that the “Customs clearance will come shortly.” Some more arrangements pertaining to Customs norms have to be done and the authorities concerned have given an undertaking to meet them soon. Mr. Gregory was accompanied by Fisheries Director P.I. Shiekh Pareeth, who is former Chief Engineer of the Harbour Engineering Department (HED). HED constructed the port. Mr. Gregory said he would call a meeting of the Customs officers concerned in two or three days to decide on the clearance. The Kollam cargo port is already a Customs notified one.
