Students’ gesture to flood-hit

Staff Reporter

They decide not to hold cultural functions

BERHAMPUR: The students of the Berhampur University have decided not to hold any cultural functions during the current academic year to express their grief over the massive flood in the State and the sad happenings in Kandhamal district.

They have decided to donate the money which would have been utilised for these cultural functions to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The students’ leaders and the university authorities declared it during the celebration of National Service Scheme (NSS) day on Wednesday. It may be noted that at the request of a large number of students the university authorities have decided not to hold students’ union elections this year. The students had decided for it to save the campus from tensions and clashes between students’ groups.

Attending the NSS day function the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Bijay Kumar Sahu commended the decision of the students to donate funds to the Chief Minster’s Relief Fund. The function was attended by NSS cadets from 15 colleges under the university. The function was also attended by the PG Council Chairman of the University, R.C.Panigrahy and it was coordinated by the NSS coordinator of the university, Jhansi Singh.

Student leader, Santosh Mishra said the decision to donate funds which would have been otherwise used for cultural functions was the right way to mark the NSS day. “How can we enjoy, dance and make merry when our brethren in other parts of the State are simmering in sufferings,” he said. Ms. Singh said due to this decision of the students there would be no annual function, cultural club function and cultural functions in different departments of the university. The fund earmarked for the purpose would be transferred to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund soon so that it could be utilised for the flood victims, she added. Another student Samir Acharya said meets to show up cultural talents of the students can be organised in simple manner without much fanfare. The NSS coordinator of the university said this act of benevolence of the university students would surely be emulated by the students of some other colleges affiliated to it.
