Police officers move court against RTI Act provision

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Two highly decorated Assistant Commissioners of Police have moved the Karnataka High Court seeking to restrain the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner (DG and IG) of Police, Bangalore, from releasing or divulging under the Right to Information Act any information to the public about their list of personal wealth.

The petitioners, B.B. Ashok Kumar, ACP of Devanahalli, and D. Narayanaswamy, ACP of Jayanagar, petitioned the court after the Commissioner of Police furnished information about their service register to a resident of Bangalore.

They said V. Gopalappa had filed an application before the Commissioner of Police under the RTI Act seeking information about their service register and list of assets.

DGP’s purview

While the Commissioner furnished information about the service register to Mr. Gopalappa, he said the list of assets could be obtained from the office of the DG and IG of Police. Both Mr. Ashok Kumar and Dr. Narayanaswmay said they are public servants.

They said information about their assets should not be given to anybody under the RTI Act.

They urged the court to direct both the DG and IG of Police and Commissioner of Police not to divulge, disclose or furnish any information about them under the RTI Act.

Justice N.K. Patl adjourned further hearing of the case.
