Modernisation of Godavari delta by 2011

Bund strengthening, replacement of old structures to be taken up


Administrative sanction for the project was given in November last

The work in East Godavari district is being done in 51 months


Dowlaishwaram (Rajahmundry): The Rs.3, 361-crore Godavari delta modernization works will be completed by 2011, which will give scope not only for modernizing the canal system, bund strengthening, replacements of old structures, drainage but also drinking water and water for industrial needs of the towns along the river.

The Government gave administrative sanction in November last year and as far as East Godavari district is concerned, for irrigation, drainage and Sir Arthurn Cotton Barrage the Government has sanctioned Rs.1693.80 crores and tender process has already begun. Irrigation works were divided into 10 EPC packages, drainages five packages and barrage under non-EPC.

This work in East Godavari district is being done in 51 months in four seasons. According to Superintending Engineer Raju, in 2008 the Irrigation department is going to take up only earth work when canals are closed in 2009 and second crop holiday time. In the year 2010 and 2011 also second crop holiday period will be utilized for modernization works. All the structures will be completed in seven months.

Irrigation tenders

As far as tenders are concerned for irrigation, they will be filed for five packages out of 10 and non-EPC five packages only for earth work. The irrigation officials have sent proposals to Engineer-in-Chief for five new packages and structures.

Mr. Raju said for drainage modernization little land acquisition was required.

The Dam Safety Committee at the State level has already recommended modernization of Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage and the Government has sanctioned Rs.40.58 crores. Before 2011 every year between January 15 and April 15t water will be closed for canals and during that period the works will be taken up and entire 175 gates will be replaced. But the expert committee has to visit and give green signal for this. “Structures older than 10 years will be removed and complete modernization will be done,” said Mr. Raju.
