BANGALORE: A film exhibitor from Mulbagal in Kolar district has moved the Karnataka High Court against what he alleged is an illegal action of the district administration in asking him to show a Telugu film in his cinema only two weeks after its release in Andhra Pradesh. The petitioner, who owns Jayalakshmi Talkies, said that he had on June 13, 2008 purchased the right to exhibit a Telugu film Dasavataram. He said the film was to be simultaneously released in several cinemas in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on June 13, 2008. InstructionHe said the Mulbagal Tahsildar had orally instructed him through the Mulbagal Deputy Superintendent of Police to exhibit the film only two weeks after its release in Andhra Pradesh. He said this decision was taken when the District Magistrate of Kolar met exhibitors of Kolar on January 16, 2008 after he received representations from the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike. The vedike had sought primary rights for Kannada films. He said at the meeting with the District Magistrate, only exhibitors from Kolar were called. He said a resolution was passed at the meeting to release films in other languages only two weeks after their release in their State. Permission soughtHe termed it as illegal, arbitrary and unconstitutional the resolution and urged the court to permit him to exhibit the film. Justice N. Kumar adjourned further hearing of the case.
