Government working out ways to tide over financial crunch It will waive over Rs. 12-crore loan taken by farmers from cooperative societies PUDUCHERRY: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to hand over the medical college project of the territorial government to the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). Briefing newsmen on the decisions of the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam said the government had agreed in-principle to hand over the project to the ESIC. A five-member committee headed by the Health Secretary would hold talks with the Corporation to work out the modalities of the transfer of the medical college. Steps would be taken to make the college operational by the next academic year, he said. The Cabinet has decided to issue a no-objection certificate for setting up a private medical college at Kalapet, provided the management would not seek deemed university status after it became functional. The government had the right to withdraw the certificate and initiate penal action against the management if it violated the clause, Mr. Vaithilingam said. When it was pointed out that in the past, several private managements had failed to honour the commitment in Puducherry, he said the issue was being looked into. The government would not hesitate to take action against those violating the provisions in the future, he added. The Cabinet also gave its approval for several tourism projects to be taken up on Public Private Partnership mode in four regions of the Union Territory, he said. The projects approved included a five star resort at Murungapakkam and family entertainment centres at Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. On the financial position of the Union Territory, Mr. Vaithilingam said it had a cash balance of Rs. 643 crore and the government was working out ways to tide over the financial crunch. Stating that the government would be able to implement all welfare schemes, he said the Cabinet also decided to waive the loan taken by the farmers from cooperative societies to the tune of Rs. 12.81 crore. Mr. Vaithilingam also announced the Cabinet’s decision to approve the new Information Technology policy of his government.
