PUDUCHERRY: Home Minister E. Valsaraj on Thursday said, “the government will not tolerate any bad conduct or indiscipline on the part of policemen.”

“Nexus between the police and the criminals, if established, will not be tolerated at any cost,” he said, addressing senior police officers at a law and order review meeting.

Appreciating the recent steps taken by the police to control crime and maintain law and order, he said the force could not remain complacent and there should be continued effort to win the confidence and faith of the general public. Though the Union Territory was known for its peaceful atmosphere, of late there were several incidents that disturbed law and order and created a “bad reputation” for the force, Mr. Valsaraj said.

Stressing the need for co-operation among various law enforcement agencies, he said there should be periodical interaction between the territorial police, intelligence agencies and their counterparts from other southern States for exchange of information.

The government would soon commission the Police Department’s proposal to install closed circuit television network in all vulnerable areas in the Union Territory, he said. Mr. Valsaraj called upon the police to create awareness of traffic rules among the general public.

He also wanted the police to evolve effective measures in consultation with the traders to find a solution to traffic problems in the town. Chief Secretary to Government (Additional Charge) Naini Jeyaseelan, Director-General of Police A.S. Khan, and Inspector-General of Police S. Vasudeva Rao also attended the meeting.
