Boost micro-financing, says Vellappally

Staff Reporter

‘It will help in alleviating poverty’

Says Rs.800 crore has been disbursed among women

Hails stand taken by MES in education sector

KOZHIKODE: SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan said here on Thursday that micro-finance was the solution to the poverty of the members of the Ezhava community.

He was speaking at a workshop for SNDP office-bearers in the district to discuss issues including strengthening of micro-finance schemes, family survey and setting up of new engineering colleges.

A sum of Rs.800 crore was disbursed among Ezhava women as part of micro-financing, he said. The micro-finance would help in alleviating poverty of the Ezhava community. If they prospered, the entire State would also develop in the process, he said.

The LDF government brought in a Bill to control self-financing institutions, but minority communities running these institutions managed to get off the control. They functioned as if they were not bound by the Kerala Education Rules, he alleged.

He praised the stance of the Muslim Educational Society (MES) which even when it got the minority status decided to surrender 50 per cent of the seats in its education institutions to the government.

Mr. Natesan said Ezhavas were backward in education, especially in Malabar. The Yogam had decided to set up 10 engineering colleges in the State. Applications for five colleges were submitted to Kerala University.
