Janardhan Reddy’s decision to develop hills at Sangankal as tourist spot welcomed ‘Roads in the city have to be repaired immediately’ BELLARY: The Bellary District Chamber of Commerce and Industry has informed Minister for Tourism G. Janardhan Reddy that basic infrastructure in Bellary city has to be improved on priority before developing hills at Sangankal, the earliest village settlement in south India dating from Neolithic period, as a tourist spot. In a letter to Mr. Reddy, who is also Bellary district in-charge Minister, president of the Chamber P. Basanna welcomed the decision of the Minister on developing the Sangankal hills as a tourist spot, introducing ropeway and banning quarrying activities in the village. “We welcome your decision, as a tourist spot will come up on the outskirts of the city. But we like to draw your attention to the fact that there are several other things that needs to be done on priority for improving infrastructure in the city,” he said. According to Mr. Basanna, roads in the city are in a bad condition and have to be repaired immediately. As work on the proposed ring road was yet to begin, there was an urgent need to repair roads and make them motorable, he said. Streetlights, especially halogen lights, at important circles were not working, causing inconvenience to the public. Similarly, traffic signals were also not functioning, he said and wanted the Minister to instruct officials concerned to repair them. Funds releasedMeanwhile, the Bellary City Corporation has released Rs. 45 lakh for taking up road repairs. The work on relaying roads such as Anantapur-Sangankal road and Durgamma temple-SP Circle road, and filling of potholes on the National Highway No. 63 which passes thought the city, has started.
