BANGALORE: Janata Dal (Secular), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India and All-India Forward Bloc on Thursday jointly held a rally against the nuclear deal with the United States.

State secretary of the CPI (M) V.J.K. Nair claimed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had not secured Parliament’s approval before going to the United States.

He said Dr. Singh had not informed the country the pro and cons of the deal.

CPI leader Siddanagouda Patil said that the nuclear deal would snatch away the sovereign power of India.

It would keep India socially, economically and politically enslaved for not less than 30 years, he added.

Transparency

He said the United States President George Bush had been keeping his part of the deal totally transparent in his country and there was no reason why the Indian Parliament should be kept in the dark by Dr. Singh.

Forward Bloc leader G.R. Shivashankar said the nuclear deal lacked transparency and would plunge the country into energy insecurity.

Others who spoke on the occasion included member of the State secretariat of the CPI (M) G.N. Nagaraj, M.C. Venkatramu of CPI, and C. Narayanaswamy, working president of Janata Dal (S).

Former Chief Minister and Janata Dal (S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy inaugurated the rally by garlanding the Gandhi statue at Seshadri Road.

The leaders also condemned attacks on churches in the State.
