IMPHAL: Three armed militants were gunned down in a 40 minute gun battle with a combined force of police and 16 Assam Rifles on Wednesday night near Imphal. A police report said the militants opened fire at the personnel. The militants were killed in the ensuing exchange of fire. Other militants managed to escape in the cover of darkness. Police recovered an AK 56 rifle, a 9 mm pistol, a Chinese made hand grenade and assorted ammunition. In another incident, two men and a woman suffered bullet injuries when militants opened fire at a bus carrying the villagers of Heirok. Militants of the United National Liberation Front(UNLF) and the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKYL) had banned the villagers from coming out of their village as a punishment for demanding Special Police Officers (SPOs) to tackle militants. Earlier too there have been attacks on buses carrying people from the village. About 10,000 villagers came to Imphal on Wednesday to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi demanding protection. Initially, the police resorted to baton charging and firing of tear gas canisters to control the crowd. However, later they were allowed to hold a meeting in Imphal. The villagers have been agitating against atrocities by militants following the killing of two girls and a boy and the blinding of a girl on March 24. For the first time in Manipur the government recruited 300 SPOs from this village. However in view of the restrictions by the underground organisations the government has so far been unable to use their services.
