SHPI status for four central co-op. banks

Staff Reporter

These banks have been promoting SHGs

BERHAMPUR: The Central Cooperative Bank in Berhampur was accorded the status of Self Help Promotion Institute (SHPI) by the NABARD.

The NABARD has accorded this status to four central cooperative banks functioning under the Orissa State Cooperative Bank (OSCB). The central cooperative banks, which were selected, include those in Berhampur, Sundergarh, Keonjhar and Balasore. These cooperative banks have been active in promoting the self help groups (SHG) in their areas. After declaration of these cooperative banks as SHPIs their efforts to promote SHGs will be enhanced.

Speaking to The Hindu, Maheswar Khillar, the secretary of the Central Cooperative Bank in Berhampur said around 1,870 SHGs were already attached to their bank with a credit linkage of Rs. 7.74 crore. The NABARD has directed this cooperative bank to add up another 360 SHGs by the end of February 2010.

Mr. Khillar was confident that they would be able to meet this target as according to him the bank had already formed 100 new SHGs.

The cooperative bank has established a special cell to promote SHGs. It has produced an audio-visual CD to attract beneficiaries towards SHG movement in rural areas.

As per the instructions of the State Government extra emphasis is on formation of women SHGs and to link them to financial institutions.

Usually the women of rural areas were still ignorant of the formalities related to formation of an SHG although Orissa happens to be a leader in SHG movement in the country.

Now the selected central cooperative banks would act like an institute to make these women knowledgeable about the SHG movement and help them get financial assistance and technical help to form one.
