KOLKATA: The ONGC I-League gets underway with a match each in the two power centres of Indian football — Bengal and Goa on Friday. Former champion Kingfisher East Bengal takes on debutant Chirag United SC at the Barasat Stadium off Kolkata, while Sporting Clube de Goa meets Vasco SC in the other match at Margao. Dempo Sports Club will begin its campaign in the ONGC I-league two days later.
It was good management and planning that helped Dempo remain at the top three times in the last four seasons. The Goan side, which won the National Football League (NFL) first in 2004-05, could have made it three titles in a row last season had not Mahindra United snapped the sequence winning the title in 2005-06. Dempo coach Armando Colaco is hopeful that his boys will be able to accomplish the hat-trick this time. The I-League loses its national character as far as representations are concerned. Kolkata and Goa share eight teams, while Mumbai is the third force contributing three teams — former champion Mahindra United, Air India and Mumbai FC. This leaves JCT Mills, the last year’s runner-up, as the only representative from north. With Viva Kerala relegated south remains unrepresented.
