Varsity approves draft guidelines for PG courses

Staff Correspondent

Many members of the academic council oppose the move

‘It has become essential in the wake of deemed universities offering PG courses’

Proposal to include the title of the thesis in doctoral degree certificates dropped

DHARWAD: The Academic Council of Karnatak University, Dharwad, on Friday approved the draft guidelines for permitting affiliated colleges and colleges run by various organisations to offer postgraduate courses in various subjects.

The university had constituted a committee of deans of various faculties to formulate draft guidelines for allowing colleges to offer postgraduate courses and the draft guidelines were tabled in the council meeting on Friday.

However, speaking on the issue, many members of the council expressed concern over the move stating that the sanctity of university PG courses would be lost.

MLC N. Tippanna, MLAs Shrishailappa Bidaruru and Appaji Nadagouda opposed the move saying that it would lower the quality of the PG courses. Mr. Tippanna, who opposed the move, wondered whether quality teachers and facilities were available in the affiliated colleges to offer PG courses. Later, he said that he had no objection if only eligible colleges were given permission to offer PG courses.

Those who favoured the move said that it had become essential in the wake of deemed universities offering PG courses to students and fleecing them by charging high fees. They said students of the university were opting for such courses as they were unable to get admission in the university because of limited number of seats. Some members said that some colleges had been given permission and if the university decided not to give permission anymore, there was every chance of colleges getting directions from the court. They favoured stringent guidelines so that the quality of education was not affected.

The discussion ended with Vice-Chancellor S.K. Saidapur announcing that the draft guidelines would be approved with some additions and corrections as suggested by the academic council members.

The university, however, dropped a proposal to include the title of the thesis in the certificates while awarding doctoral degrees (Ph.D.) to students. The issue was raised in the previous meeting of the council and it was decided to get inputs on the issue from other universities before taking a decision on it.

The council decided to constitute a committee for considering a provision for internal assessment of Computer Application paper in B.A., B.Sc. and B.SW courses. The meeting approved resolutions on naming government colleges after donors.
