People’s Democratic Party leader gunned down

Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR: Militants on Thursday shot dead Ghulam Mohammad Mir, zonal president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Rafiabad Assembly constituency.

Police said Mir was shot dead by militants at the Dangiwacha market around 2 p.m. “They fired at him probably from a pistol and he fell down,” said a police officer.

He was immediately taken to hospital but was declared brought dead.

Mir, locals said, was a prominent PDP leader in the area. He had been living in Baramulla for quite some time. Deputy Inspector-General of Police (North Kashmir Range) Abdul Gani Mir said police had given him security sometime back but he refused to accept it.

Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla Baseer Khan told The Hindu that he had allotted accommodation to him in Baramulla on September 11, but he refused to take it.
