Srinivasan, Jagdale to be elected unopposed

Special Correspondent

Mumbai: The new dispensation of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that will take charge for a three-year term (2008-10) on Saturday has sent out a clear message that it would not backtrack and compromise on working committee resolutions.

Messrs. Shashank Manohar, N. Srinivasan, Sanjay Jagdale and Mohindre Pandove would officially take over as the principal office-bearers of the BCCI at the 79th annual general body meeting (AGM) at the Cricket Centre here on Saturday.

While Mr. Manohar was elected president-elect for 2008-11 at the 78th AGM last September, Messrs. Srinivasan, Jagdale and Pandove would be declared elected for the post of hon. secretary, joint secretary and hon. treasurer for a three-year term.

“Unfortunately we did not receive more than one nomination for these posts,” said Sharad Pawar, outgoing BCCI president after supervising the preliminary election procedure on Thursday and Friday.

Chirayu Amin (West), Arun Jaitley (North), Lalit Modi (Central), Shivlal Yadav (South) and Arindham Ganguly (East) would be elected vice-presidents unopposed.

The BCCI had defined norms for those aspiring to be members of the National selection committee. At a recent working committee meeting it resolved that the selectors in the senior, junior and for women cannot be office-bearers of the BCCI or any of its affiliated units.

The working committee also resolved that cricketers should have played for India or more than 25 first class matches and should have been a retired cricketer for ten years to be considered for the senior selection committee.

The retirement period was set to five years to be considered for the junior selection committee and for the women’s selection committee.

Honorarium

The working committee, which is a decision making body of the BCCI, also decided to award a honorarium of Rs. 25 lakh per annum for senior selectors, Rs. 15 lakh for junior selectors and Rs. 5 lakh for women selectors.

A few members of the BCCI requested Mr. Pawar to reconsider and withdraw the “office-bearer” rule, but the outgoing president left the matter to the president-elect Mr. Manohar and senior and influential members.

A senior advocate Mr. Manohar clearly did not want to entertain suggestions to dilute the working committee resolutions. As a result Dilip Vengsarkar became the first victim; he’s the vice-president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Likewise Chetan Chauhan, vice-president, Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) may have lost a chance to become a selector after 20 years.

Ranjib Biswal and Bhupinder Singh have completed three years and hence became ineligible for re-election. Like Vengsarkar, Hyderabad’s Venkatapathy Raju had two more years, but the former India left-arm spinner, if sources are to be believed, was never in the running for another two-year term.

Srikkanth as chairman

It’s understood that the Messrs. Manohar and his colleagues have decided on former India opener K. Srikkanth as chairman of the selection committee with Surendra Bhave (West), Narendra Hirwani (Central), Raja Venkat (East), Yashpal Sharma (North) as his colleagues.

Hirwani was in the Indian team for the first Test against Australia in 2001 and he retired in 2006 and Bhave played first class cricket till 2001. The working committee resolutions may have to be modified for Hirwani and Bhave to be elected to the selection committee.
