AIFB Ministers to abstain from duty
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA: The leadership of the All India Forward Bloc, a major constituent of the ruling Left Front in West Bengal, has said that its Ministers will not be attending to their duties at the State Secretariat from September 29 unless the State government rescinds a special order issued here on Friday to re-issue the agricultural produce marketing committee licence to the German firm Metro Cash and Carry.
The German consul-general in the city, Gunter Wehrmann, has said that if the company does not get the required licence it “will be the death knell for any future German investment here in the eastern region”.
The AIFB has been opposed to allow the intrusion of any big player in agri-business in the State, whether in retail or wholesale sectors.
Metro, which has so far invested Rs 140 crore in the State and plans to pump in Rs 420 crore more, has been denied renewal of licence by the AIFB-controlled State Agriculture Marketing Board.
