VIJAYAWADA: Celebrating the International Deaf Awareness Week, volunteers of the Youth Red Cross unit of Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala (junior college) on Friday conducted several competitions for students of Madonna School for the Deaf and Dumb at Gunadala.

Six students from the college, led by coordinator of the Youth Red Cross unit S. Vijaya Lakshmi, reached the school early in the day and invited all the 250 students to the playground.

Competitions like running, scrawling and slow walking were conducted for the students of primary classes, while quiz and memory games were conducted for the students of classes VIII, IX and X.

Keeping in view the limitations of the hearing challenged students, the organisers chose to conduct the quiz in a written format. Instead of orally asking the questions, the Intermediate students wrote them down on a blackboard and asked the participating teams to give their replies in writing.

In the memory game, 20 articles were shown to the students for a few minutes and later the students were asked to write down the name of each article.

Those who managed to scribble the names of maximum number of articles were adjudged winners.

Ms. Vijaya Lakshmi said that the volunteers of the Youth Red Cross unit were visiting select places once a month. “Kavya and Viswanath, children of my neighbour Subhashini, gave Rs. 4,000 from their pocket money to conduct these events. Today is Viswanath’s birthday and he wanted to celebrate it in a different manner,” she said.
