Features include ease of operation and fuel efficiency It runs on alternative fuels too VISAKHAPATNAM: Ashok Leyland, a major manufacturer of buses and commercial vehicles, has the capacity to build special buses required for Bus Rapid Transit System, said Gopalan of Ashok Leyland. Speaking on “Special technologies for buses related to BRTS” on the concluding day of the workshop on ‘BRTS Implementation: Issues and Solutions’, being jointly organised by the Indo-German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) and Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering on Friday, he said Leyland was already supplying buses for BRTS in Delhi. The special features of Leyland include ease of operation, low maintenance, driver comfort and fuel efficiency. The company also has the capacity to manufacture front-engine, semi-low floor buses for convenience of physically handicapped passengers. It has the wherewithal to manufacture double-decker and vestibule buses and those that run on alternative fuels like CNG. B. Anil Baliga of Volvo said special technologies were being developed in India for BRTS. Indian companies should manufacture more buses, he said. P.S. Suresh of CMS Traffic Systems spoke on ‘Intelligent transport systems’. Rakesh Kaul of SREI Infrastructures Finance Limited, New Delhi, Santosh Kodukula of GTZ, Bangkok, Madhav Pai of EMBARQ, Mumbai, Manfred Breithaupt of GTZ, Germany spoke. Prof P.S. Rao presided. Organising secretary P. Veerabhardra Rao, IGIAT director M.P.S. Murthy and Prof. M. Kishore Kumar were present.
