Two sari expos woo customers

Handloom Development Corporation, KSIC showcase exquisite products

LIVE ACTION: A sari designer at the ‘Kaithari Thiruvizha’ at Vijaya Mahal in Chennai on Friday.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Handloom Development Corporation’s 10-day ‘Kaithari Thiruvizha’ kicked off at Vijaya Mahal, T. Nagar, on Friday, and aims at cashing in on Ramzan and Deepavali festivals.

At the same time, Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) displayed its heritage Mysore Silk saris in the adjacent building to woo customers from September 26 to 29. Both festivals were inaugurated by Textile Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran.

While the State Handlooms and Textiles Department showcased silk saris ranging from Rs.3,000 to Rs.30,000 to attract the middle class, KSIC came out with a designer sari costing Rs.27,000, ‘threads of gold’ costing Rs.1.25 lakh and golden sari interlaced with Swarovski crystals and gold threads priced at Rs.1.75 lakh along with other saris to woo hi-end customers.

At the ‘Kaithari Thiruvizha,’ Mr. Ramachandran launched designer sari, ‘Kanchana Mala,’ and reviewed the TV commercial of Handlooms and Textiles products. The TV commercial was conceived and prepared in four days by the National Film Development Corporation.

State Handlooms Director R. Jaya said 122 societies were taking part in the 10-day fair that would be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., till October 5. We hope to sell shirts, saris and home furnishings worth Rs.75 lakh as against Rs.60 lakh achieved last year.”

Mr. Ramachandran distributed identity cards to weavers as part of the Weavers Welfare Insurance Scheme and gave solatium of Rs 9.60 lakh to the next of the kin of 15 deceased weavers.

Handicrafts expo

Chennai District Collector Mythili K. Rajendran inaugurated ‘Sarees of India’, an exhibition-cum-sale of handicrafts at Sankara Hall, Alwarpet. The 11-day fair is open to public from 10 am to 8 pm. A special discount of 10 per cent is being offered on handicrafts and textile products.
